Lessons from Rabbi Groner and computers

Boruch Hashem, this past Shabbos, Parshas Eikev, we Machon Alte of Kiryat Malachi had the privilege to have Rabbi Leibel Groner, the Rebbe's secretary with us for Shalosh Seudot. Amongst the captivating stories he related, he explained that we should all use every talent Hashem gave us, for why else would he grant us such blessings, if not to use them to complete our jobs. Rabbi Groner compared talents to typing a web address on the computer: if someone types www.moshiachcom, and leaves out the tiny . between letters, he will only receive a page error. The same is true for www.mos.hiachcom- the most minute detail will not connect nor produce the desired results. All things must be included and in their correct order.

The Rebbe once asked a group of computer scientists, "Tell me, gentlemen, where is cyberspace? Where is the place the information is stored and moves around until it is downloaded onto the computer?" After explaining that cyberspace is not a literal place, but that it definitely works and produces results, the Rebbe responded: "Just as you can not place your finger on the place, and you have no proof such a thing exists, so too with G-d and G-dliness: We know that He exists and has great effect on creation.

In regards to our actions, the esteemed secretary reiterated the Rebbe's parable: To press a small button such as "enter" is so simple it can be done by training a cat or dog. When the button is pressed, millions of pages of information will be downloaded from this mysterious "cyberspace." When a Jew performs a small act such as lighting a candle on Friday afternoon, she is 'downloading' G-dliness into the world.
